CASE STUDY.
terrazzo

Challenge
The project, carried out in cooperation with the investor, Thomas Phifer & Partners (New York), APA Wojciechowski and the general contractor Warbud S.A., required a floor combining the highest prestige with durability and resistance to intensive use. The architects were very demanding, and we made dozens of samples and a large mockup for approval. Standard systems did not meet technical or aesthetic expectations. The systems did not meet technical or aesthetic expectations.
Solution
We used a terrazzo exclusive system based on a resin with increased UV resistance, free of volatile organic compounds. For the flooring we used aggregate of pure quartz, subjected to optical cleaning (selection) using a specialized device, which allowed to obtain a very uniform color and full transparency of the material The system provides durability, color stability and meets the requirements for public buildings. Prefabricated stairs were made of the same material, which allowed full consistency. Expansion joints were kept to a minimum, and fields without expansion joints of several hundred square meters were used.
The floor is easy to clean, stain resistant, completely non-absorbent, and is distinguished by its high strength and flexibility.
Implementation
The system has been tested by the ITB and other certified laboratories, among others. The challenge was complicated logistics and running the work in parallel with other finishing teams. Much of the material was imported by sea from the United States, and others from Portugal. In total, we delivered, transported and embedded nearly 200 tons of material, of which about 80% was aggregates.
The grinding and polishing machines covered nearly 400 kilometers during the implementation.

Effect
The resulting floor is distinguished by its aesthetics and above-average durability, fully in line with the architectural vision. This is the first realization of terrazzo in this technology on such a scale in Poland. In the United States, more than 90% of floors in this system have been made for more than 40 years - the solution is proven and guarantees long-term reliability. Based on tests, the durability of the system is estimated at more than 75 years. The system is 100% recyclable and meets the highest environmental standards. The components are manufactured by Concord Terrazzo Company, a member of the US Green Building Council, in accordance with LEED requirements. The products are certified by Greenguard for chemical emissions, ensuring the highest indoor air quality. Technology is constantly being refined to not only meet, but exceed the requirements of builders and designers.
